End caps are crucial in holding a filter together, while keeping a filter’s pleats open. High temperature and chemical resistance adhesives are key to keeping these end caps in place.
Typical temperatures that need to be resisted are anywhere from 250⁰F – 400 ⁰F.
There are many chemicals can come in to contact to adhesives in filters. Below are some typical chemicals that adhesives can come in contact with:
♦ Motor, hydraulic, & transmission oil
♦ Alcohol, acetone, & other organic solvents
♦ Natural gas, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide
1. End cap bonding adhesive technologies
♦ Automotive liquid filtration needs: Chemical resistance, high-temperature resistance, rigid
Recommended technologies MMA, 2 part urethane, 2 part epoxy, elastosol, hot-melt polyamide
♦ Automotive engine and high-temperature industrial air filtration needs: High-temperature resistance, chemical resistance (in some cases)
Recommended technologies MMA, 2 part urethane, 2 part epoxy, elastosol, hot melt polyamide
♦ Consumable water filtration needs: Fast setting, low odor, low VOC, bonds well to difficult substrates, no swelling
Recommended technologies Hot melt polyolefin, metallocene, EVA, 2 part urethane, 2 part epoxy
2. Potting
Potting of filters is another effective way of maintaining appropriate spacing of filter pleats but does not call for the usage of end caps. These potting adhesives tend to be molded to the intended base shape of the filter. Some of these potting adhesives can be two-part systems, foamed, or can be molded using low pressure and temperature.
Potting adhesive technologies
♦ Automotive engine and high-temperature industrial air filtration needs: High-temperature resistance, chemical resistance (in some cases), some gasketing properties
Recommended technologies 2 part urethane, elastosol, hot melt polyamide
♦ Ambient temperature industrial air filtration needs: Lightweight, some gasketing properties, full cure in production line
Recommended technologies Hot melt polyamide, 2 part urethane (foamed or unfoamed)
♦ Industrial water filtration needs: Highly hydrophobic, low hardness, low VOC, transparent, proper application viscosity
Recommended technologies 2 part urethane
