Thermal adhesive or called thermal conductive (heat-conducting) adhesive/ glue is the combination of strong bonding with robust thermal performance in a range of assemblies.
What are Thermally Conductive Adhesives?
This type of adhesive is a thermally conductive product designed to offer effective thermal management in heat-generating components, combined with excellent bonding strength to join components.
With various chemical bases including epoxy resins, polyurethane resins, and silicone resins, thermal adhesive delivers two main functions:
- Thermal management purpose
- Contribute to mechanical strength in the limited areas
As miniaturization of electronic circuitry may result in problems of heat build-up, which can cause premature failure of electronic components if their maximum operating temperature is exceeded. Thermally conductive adhesive can be used to provide a heat-conducting path, fastening transistors, diodes or other power devices to suitable heat sinks to ensure such a heat build-up does not occur.

How to choose the thermally conductive adhesive or glue?
The most common thermally conductive systems are formulated with epoxy, silicone, and polyurethane. They are different in hardness, bonding strength, and ability to resist external factors such as water, chemical, vibration, etc. In short, the beneficial orders of these 3 adhesives will be:
Chemical Base | Epoxy | Polyurethane | Modified Base | Silicone |
Hardness | ++++ | ++ | +++ | + |
Bonding Strength | ++++ | ++ | ++++ | + |
External factor resistance | ++++ | +++ | +++ | + |
High-temperature Resistance | +++ | ++ | ++ | ++++ |
In electronics, the most popular thermally conductive adhesive is silicone adhesive & modified silicone adhesive which has been innovated to improve the bonding strength of traditional silicone.
However, due to the strict environmental regulations, many manufacturers are switching to epoxy and polyurethane adhesives which are referred to as non-silicone thermally conductive adhesives.
